Looking for a cool, air-conditioned spot in Amsterdam on a hot day? AC is more common in the city than you might think — especially in larger, public buildings that are already cooled. Here’s where you’re most likely to find it, with concrete examples.
Where you’re most likely to find AC
In Amsterdam, air conditioning is most common in these places:
- Museums — such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk and NEMO. Cooling protects the collections, so it’s almost always pleasantly cool inside.
- Libraries — such as the OBA branches. Often free to enter, quiet and cooled: ideal for cooling off.
- Shopping centres and large stores — think Kalvertoren, Magna Plaza and larger department stores.
- Hotel lobbies — larger hotels almost always have a cooled lobby where you can sit for a while.
- Modern cafés and restaurants — many newer venues have AC; older “brown” pubs usually don’t.
How can you be sure a place has AC?
Not every place advertises it. On the Waar Is Airco map, each location shows a status: “Verified” (confirmed), “Likely” (based on the type of place) or “Unknown”. Visitors can also vote on whether a place has AC, making the information more reliable over time.
