Not everyone has AC at home, and at the hottest part of the day you just want to cool down somewhere. Luckily, cities have many free or cheap places that stay cool. These are the best options.
Cooled, public places
These places are often free to enter and air-conditioned:
- Libraries — cool, quiet and free; you can comfortably spend a few hours there.
- Shopping centres and large stores — free to walk into and usually well cooled.
- Museums — some have free-access halls; many are pleasantly cool.
- Public buildings and hotel lobbies — often a cool place to sit for a while.
Natural cooling
No AC nearby? Look for natural coolness:
- Shady parks and woods stay cooler than the paved city.
- Near water — a canal, lake or fountain — it’s often a few degrees fresher.
